The best way would be to get your family to settle and not need the lawyers. Then they won't have to bill your family on all the time they're spending on your case. The more combative the two parties are, the more things will get stalled and the more work the attorneys will have to spend on the case. They do a lot of work outside of the courthouse and appointments. Legal research and preparing documents takes up the majority of a lawyers time if they have a difficult case so the chances are they are not overbilling. Just have your parents ask for a detailed accounting of the bill.
If you were a lawyer and you spent your time and expertise helping someone, you would want to be paid for your work, wouldn't you. They might seem ridiculous to you but you probably don't realize how tedious and time consuming legal work can be.

If they have breached their part of the contract, then the contract itself would be null and void. However, if there was no defined time limit in which they had to contact your insurance company, then they will not be breaching their part of the agreement. Try calling them for an update. Accident settlements can take a LONG time to negotiate sometimes.

There is no way to hold them accountable. They are greedy scumbags that make money on people's grief. The only way to deal with them is to get rid of their worthless a*sses. In your particular situation, there is nothing that your mom can't do herself without the lawyer's help. She really needs to get rid of them, set the court date, get the house back, and deny him the spousal support. The judge will be on her side, she has nothing to worry about.

pre-law, pre-med, it's all the same To become a lawyer you need an undergraduate degree, doesn't matter what the degree is in either. I know people with art history degrees in law school. Then once in law school, you'll get to take maybe 3 to 4 classes that interest you. You don't have to know a single thing about the environment to be an environmental lawyer, just be interested in taking money from others.

Yes you can always replace a lawyer that you have hired in any case, if it is a criminal case then you must petition the court but your question indicates that it is a civil matter and all you have to do is hire a new attorney and they will file the proper paper work with the court.

The attorney will know exactly what is needed and how to fill out the forms correctly. It would be done the right way. Well worth his fee to make sure it is done the right way.
